When drug kingpin Pablo Escobar was killed in a shootout some years ago, he left behind a few dozen hippopotamuses on his Colombian estate. Without any natural predators, the behemoths have multiplied and now pose a variety of risks to the area. Animal rights activists, however, oppose the killing of the beasts, and a U.S. judge recently supported their cause with a ruling that the hippos could be considered legal persons for the purposes of bringing court action.
